He had the job description open on one screen and his résumé on the other.
He was almost embarrassingly qualified.
The recruiter had called that morning.
Great company.
Good package.
Senior role.
The sort of job he had spent twenty years becoming qualified for.
He could already imagine the interview.
He knew which examples to use.
He knew which achievements to emphasise.
He knew how to answer every question.
And suddenly he realised he didn't want the job.
Not because it was beneath him.
Because he could already see himself doing it.
Monday morning.
Quarterly reviews.
Budget season.
Leadership off-sites.
Another five years becoming even better at something he already knew how to do.
He looked at his résumé.
It was an impressive account of everywhere he had been.
It said almost nothing about where he wanted to go.
Given who I actually am, what makes sense from here?
